The Cush

In the time-honored tradition of husband/wife duos, (think Sonic Youth/Yo La Tengo) providing the creative core and identity of a band, Burette and Gabrielle Douglas bring a sound and musical vision all their own to The Cush.

After fronting DFW based noise pop band, Buck Jones, from 1993 to 2000, The Douglas’ decided it was time for a major change. They relocated to Burlington, Vermont, and released their self-titled debut album, and began touring the Northeast US.

2006 saw the release of their eagerly anticipated album, “New Appreciation for Sunshine” released on Undertow Records. They performed at NXNE in Toronto, and The Dream Machine festival during their first UK tour in 2007.

In 2010, they returned to their home state of Texas and released their third self-recorded album, “Between the Leaves”. The album was recorded in various locations amid several east coast tours between Vermont and Texas. In 2011 they again toured the UK, as well as dates in Italy, Sweden, and Germany. They performed at Austin Psych Fest in 2012.

In 2015 they released the psych rocking “Transcendental Heatwave”, released jointly via Norwegian label Follyphone Records and Dream Machine Records in the UK/Europe and Dreamy Soundz /Synaptic Empire in the US. In 2016 they did their third UK tour, including a stop at the Supernormal festival in the UK, as well as the Isle of Man, and Norway. In 2017 they performed at Waking Windows music festival in  Vermont.

In February of 2018, they released “The Isle of Man EP” on Dreamy Life Records. The songs were written by Burette and Gabrielle, and recorded by Gyp Buggane in three days at Ballagroove studios during their 2016 tour, it perfectly encapsulates their unforgettable experiences on the inspiring isle.

Over the years, The Cush have had the opportunity to share bills with many talented artists including: Brian Jonestown Massacre, Broken Social Scene, Cat Power, Chelsea Wolfe, Centro-matic, Dead Meadow, Deerhoof, The Early Years, The Fiery Furnaces, The Heartless Bastards, James McMurtry, Morgan Delt, the Sea & Cake, Stars, Telegraph Canyon, the Telescopes, True Widow, & The Warlocks

While the core of the Cush has always been Burette and Gabrielle, they’ve had the pleasure to perform with many outstanding musicians over the years,  all of whom have contributed to the evolution of The Cush, and all remain friends!

Present line up:

Burette Douglas: guitar, vocals

Gabrielle Douglas: bass, vocals

Ben Hance: guitar, keys

Austin Green: drums, percussion

The Cush are currently writing material for their fifth album, and planning tour dates for the US as well as the UK and Europe.
