Rams need three overtimes to bring home first win of the season

Fort Worth – 10/05/19

The 0 – 4 Texas Wesleyan Rams came into Saturday’s game averaging 30 points a game. Unfortunately, they have also been giving up 50 points a game.

But the Rams D stepped up and held the Southwestern Assemblies of God (SAGU) Lions to 3 points in the first half, allowing the Rams to go into the locker room with a 20 – 3 lead thanks to touchdowns by Collier Ricks, Jemarcus Jones and Trey Jackson, along with a missed extra point.

With 8:59 remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Rams stopped the Lions inches short on 4th and goal. Two plays later, thanks to a botched snap, the Lions recovered a fumble in the end zone for their first TD of the night, closing the gap to 20 – 10.

The Lions would score 17 unanswered points to go up 27 – 20 before Le”Mant Monroe scored on a 69-yard pass from Avery Childs to tie the game with 6:49 remaining.

The Rams retook the lead 34 – 27 with 3:47 remaining in the game after a 59-yard TD run by Jemarcus Jones.

But 12 plays and 65 yards later the Lions scored as Landon Moon connected with Bryant Dotson for a 13-yard TD pass with one second left on the clock, sending the game into overtime.

After trading touchdowns in the first OT and field goals in the second, the Rams scored first in the third OT with a 17 yard touchdown run from Jermarcus Jones, forcing the Lions to go for it all.

The Lions fell short when their QB was sacked on 4th down, ending the rollercoaster ride with a 52-44 win for the Rams.

With their first win under their belt the Rams will be traveling Saturday to Goodwill, Okla., to face the 1 – 4 Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies.
