Vaqueros claim victory, Chisholm Trail Clasico Belt on Saturday

FORT WORTH- 06.01.19- Lightning crashed repeatedly Saturday, yet late in the match the Vaqueros struck three times of their own to take a 3-1 victory against Denton in a match marked by multiple lightning delays.

The match featured roughly 3 hours in delays and a backed up start time due to repeated lightning flashes in the area.

Fort Worth (3-0, 9 points) trailed 1-0 in the 60th minute before the comeback surge claimed the NPSL Lone Star Conference victory and the Chisholm Trail Clasico derby and belt.

Miles Byass leveled the match 1-1 off a Zack Stavrou assist in the 65th minute.

Declan O’Shea scored the eventual game-winner off another of his signature long range blasts. O’Shea had a 29 yard strike in the 2019 season opener. O’Shea essentially duplicated the goal with a 30 yard one-timer as Denton (3-2, 9 points) tried to clear a Vaqueros corner kick.

Jamie Lovegrove added the final goal in the 85th minute as VcMor Eligwe found him wide just two yards outside the left elbow of the penalty area.

The Vaqueros and Diablos created a championship title belt to commemorate their newly formed rivalry. The aggregate total goes the Fort Worth 7-4 after a 4-3 Vaqueros victory in the first leg of the series.

“Our boys showed their maturity on Saturday amid what were taxing delays on both sides,” Vaqueros general manager Tobias Xavier Lopez said. “Falling behind and then scrapping back for the victory proved the boys possess the character necessary to win tough, tough matches such as this. Full credit to Denton, they had their fair share of the play, their fans stuck it out through the delays and their boys again pushed us to the brink.”

The Vaqueros return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday June 8 at home against Trinity River Cup rival and Lone Star Conference foe, Dallas City FC (1-2-1, 4 points).
